Under age
by Brendan Tobin (Chairman 1996 - 2000)

Like all other clubs an under age structure is very important in any club and that is no different in our club. In the early 70's as there was no under age club in the area our players assisted Fourmilewater and the Nire in their respective codes and that was the way until the late 70's when under age teams were affiliated in Sliabh gCua/St. Mary's.
As our population is small we found it hard to compete with alot of the opposition, often we would have to field players 5 and 6 years under the respective age group they would be playing. In 1983 we won the Western U-14B double but were well beaten in both county finals. Again in 1985 being assisted by Modeligo players we won the U-16B hurling Western final but once again were well beaten by De La Salle in the county final.

In 1986 a new club was formed called Naomh Brid, this was an amalgamation of Modeligo and Sliabh gCua/St. Mary's to look after under age affairs. This club has gone from strength to strength over the past ten years, winning U-21B football, minor B football and U-12A football county finals. We have also won several Western titles. We have players who have played for the county in both codes including J.P. Fitzpatrick and Raymond Ryan who played in the 1992 minor hurling All-Ireland final. In 1988 J.P. Fitzpatrick won the U-14 county Feile skills and David Whelan also went on to win the junior All-Ireland football title in 1999.
