Sliabh gCua create history

Sliabh gCua ............1-02
Fenor.......................1-02

November 1936

Fraher Field was the venue for the Junior county football final between Sliabh gCua and Fenor. The game was played in pretty good conditions considering the time of the year.
As before any game in the G.A.A., the team names had to be given to the referee. However, the only problem was the names given to the referee were not representing the player's on the field.
The names given to the referee were:
Mick Power (who played in goal and was captain), Ned Burke, Paddy Nagle, Jimmy Kiely, Jack Dalton, Maurice 'Sonny' Cliffe, Paddy Cliffe (Anna Thompson's father), Jimmy O' Keeffe, Tom McGrath, John Harrington, Paddy Hassett, Jimmy Kiely, John-Joe O' Keeffe, Johnny Fitzpatrick, J. Fives, John Harris (The Blacksmith), Ned Lonergan (Eamonn Lonergan's grandfather).
But the actual players that lined out for Sliabh gCua had five members from Clonmel, one by the name of Smith.
The game ended in a draw and the replay was fixed for the 6th of December.

6th December 1936

Sliabh gCua G.A.A. club created history in capturing there first county title since there formation in 1927.
The team that lined out for the replay was quite different from the drawn game. Sliabh gCua had no Clonmel men present as suspicions arose in the county.
Clashmore assisted Sliabh gCua with four players. This was legal because Clashmore won the 1934 Junior county title and the club did not contest the senior championship in '35.
The rule in the 30's was, a player could join another club if he went without playing football for 48 weeks. The big treat in those day's was the ham and bread in Green's restaurant (now Tommy Powers) after the match. Team adjourned to Maurice Flynn's pub in the square. Maurice was a native of Knockmeal and brought oranges for the player's to every match. There were no drinks for the players in those days and that was the extent of the celebrations after winning their first county Junior final.
The line out was:

1. Goalkeeper
Maurice Dalton

2. Right Corner-back
O'Rourke

3. Full-back
Tommy Power

4. Left Corner-back
